Ready for your New Year’s resolutions? Do they include goals of getting trim and healthy?

It’s that time of year when many of us set – and break – resolutions to exercise and lose weight. Too often we set unrealistic goals and lose the motivation to make a healthy change.

So why not make 2011 the year we stick to our resolutions by striving for progress rather than perfection? No one is perfect every day, but with fun, easy-to-keep exercise resolutions you’ll definitely feel good about the healthy steps you’re taking, even if they’re small.

Registered dietician and personal trainer Tiffani Bachus offers seven fitness resolutions to get you started for the new year!
1. Stay active and get moving! Take the stairs rather than the elevator. Go for a short walk after lunch or dinner. Park a bit farther from the movie theatre. Something is always better than nothing.

2. Find activities that you enjoy. You don’t have to think “traditional” exercises with weights at a gym, consider anything that gets you moving like walking and gardening. If you like to dance, sign up for a dance class once a week!

3. Mix it up to prevent boredom, injury, and “burn out” by starting slow (no need to workout everyday, try a couple times a week to start) rather than going full throttle into the new year. Keep your workout pace sustainable.

4. Set goals but make them realistic. Sign up for a 5K or a sprint triathlon. Circle the date for an upcoming event you’d love to look great for! It’s always fun to have a goal to get motivated and prepared for.

5. If you don’t like to exercise alone—team up with a partner, coach, personal trainer, or take a group exercise class. Consider joining a local athletic training club which offers weekend bike rides, walks and running activities.

6. Take it to the next level and try something new, such as rock climbing, racquetball, or yoga. Push yourself out of your comfort zone and resolve to do something you’ve always wanted to try!

7. Instead of thinking of exercise as a resolution, think of it as your commitment to a building a healthy and active LIFESTYLE, this is your chance to create a whole new way of life for 2011 and beyond!
